Motor oil is like blood in the human body – without it neither a petrol nor a diesel engine can function. It affects the engine's lifespan, operating efficiency and even fuel consumption. But, naturally, it comes in different types, the main ones being synthetic and semi-synthetic. Each has its specifics, so let's find out what sets them apart and how to choose the best one for your car?

What are synthetic and semi-synthetic oils?

The first step to the right choice is to know what the two main types of motor oil are and what their respective advantages are:

  • Synthetic

    Fully artificially produced, they undergo complex refining processes, resulting in a purified and homogeneous product. They provide excellent protection at extreme temperatures, reduced fuel consumption and extended engine life.

  • Semi-synthetic

    They are a blend of mineral and synthetic oil. They offer a balance between price and performance, but one of their main drawbacks is insufficient protection for high-powered engines.

  • Temperature range

    Synthetics provide better performance across large temperature differences. Semi-synthetics, in turn, are more suitable for moderate operating conditions.

  • Wear protection

    Synthetics protect the moving parts of the engine much better. This is especially pronounced under high load and prolonged operation.

  • Fuel economy

    Synthetic formulations have lower internal friction. This leads to less friction during engine operation and, consequently, lower fuel consumption.

In any case, however, you should also consider the exact oil grade. For example, 5W30 versus 10W40. The first option will give you easier starting at cold temperatures, while the second provides better performance at high temperatures. Remember, the first number indicates the oil's viscosity at low temperatures, and the second denotes protection at high temperatures.

Which type of engine oil should you choose?

The right choice will depend on your car and your driving style:

  • driving in extreme temperatures – when driving in areas with large temperature variations, synthetic is a better solution;
  • longer intervals between changes – if you want to extend the interval between oil changes, also choose synthetic, because it will provide more effective protection for longer;
  • older models or lower-powered engines – a quality semi-synthetic oil can do an excellent job;
  • on a limited budget – again, semi-synthetic is most suitable for you, as it offers a lower price with quite good quality.

Overall, if you don't drive in constant urban traffic or don't load the engine intensively, semi-synthetic oil is an economical and reliable solution.
