Top 5 symptoms of faulty brakes

Top 5 symptoms of faulty brakes

Road safety should be every driver's number one priority. Even the most powerful engine and the most luxurious interior don't matter if your car cannot stop safely and on time. Your braking system is the most important component for protecting you, your passengers and other road users.

Brake problems often do not appear suddenly. They give warning signs that many drivers ignore until it's too late. In this article our specialists from the OnDrive auto service share the top 5 symptoms that indicate your braking system needs urgent inspection and repair.

1. Squeaking, whining or metallic grinding

One of the clearest indicators of a problem is noise. If you hear a high-pitched squeal when pressing the pedal, this is most likely the built-in wear indicator of the pads. This is an intentional signal that the pad material is nearing its end.

However, if you hear a scraping metal-on-metal sound, the situation is much more serious. This means the pads are completely worn and their metal backing is rubbing directly against the brake discs. This not only drastically reduces braking effectiveness but also leads to expensive repairs, as the discs may be irreparably damaged.

2. Vibrations in the steering wheel or pedal

Do you feel shaking or pulsation when using the brakes at higher speed? Vibrations in the steering wheel or the pedal are usually a symptom of warped brake discs.

Discs can deform from overheating during aggressive braking or from sudden cooling (for example driving through a puddle with hot brakes). When the discs are not perfectly smooth, the pads cannot seat evenly, which leads to unstable operation of the entire braking system.

3. "Soft" or "sinking" brake pedal

If you press the brake and feel the pedal sink to the floor with little resistance, you should stop the vehicle immediately. This symptom often indicates a hydraulic problem – loss of pressure or a brake fluid leak.

It is also possible that air has entered the system or the master brake cylinder is damaged. Whatever the cause, a “soft” pedal means your braking system is not functioning and vehicle control is life-threatening.

4. The car pulls to one side when braking

This symptom can be very frightening. You press the brake and the car seems to want to steer itself to the left or right. This is called “pulling” and usually means the brake caliper on one wheel is sticking or not working with the required force.

This leads to uneven braking – one wheel slows down faster than the other, which turns the car. Besides being dangerous in extreme situations, this causes rapid and uneven wear of tires and suspension components.

5. Dashboard warning light (ABS or brake warning)

Modern cars are equipped with sensors that monitor the condition of your braking system. Never ignore dashboard warning lights!

  • the handbrake light may illuminate if the brake fluid level is dangerously low;
  • the ABS light indicates a problem with the electronics that may prevent the wheels from maintaining traction during hard braking.

Your braking system does not just require repair when it breaks – it requires regular maintenance. If you notice even one of the symptoms listed above, do not delay visiting the service. Brakes do not "fix themselves", and problems only worsen over time. Drive sensibly and take care of your car so it can take care of you.
